Thematic walks

Attila József in Ferencváros

FerencvárosThe municipality of Ferencváros – a noted district of Budapest – contributed with an interactive literature walk to the programs of the Night of the Museums in 2015. The narrated audio tour was prepared in cooperation of the Petőfi Literature Museum and the Institute for Computer Science and Control. It guides the participants to a handful locations of the life of the poet Attila József, all connected with the district.

The GUIDE@HAND Budapest mobile application was developed by the eLearning Department of SZTAKI, the Institute for Computer Science and Control. It enables the attendants of the memory walk to get acquainted with the locations of the life of the poet Attila József along sites in the district. The most important advantage featured by the app is that smartphone users can repeat the walk at any time, even without having an online Internet connection. They only need to download and install the app and the relevant walks prior to the beginning of the tour. User orientation during the walk is supported by an interactive map of Budapest, highlighting the track and the points of interest (POIs). Text of the quoted literature can also be read on the screen of the phone. The location of the sites visited are automatically stored by the app, hence the walk can be interrupted at any time. Upon returning to the POI last visited, the walk can be easily resumed.

In order to bring up memories of the childhood of the poet, some parts selected from the biography roman by Jolán József “The life of Attila József”, poems of Attila József, as well as background information related to the history of the relevant locations are recalled, featuring both textual and multimedia content. The poems, local history and biography information are delivered by using the voices of famous Hungarian artists, e.g. Zoltán Latinovits, Zsuzsa Holl, Gábor Bakos-Kiss and Kristóf Horváth (artist Bob).

An option is available for those who, for some reason, cannot follow the walk route with their mobile phone on the spot. This applies, for example, to users with walking disabilities, or those interfered by the long distance or the limited time available. This option makes it possible to enjoy the walk by discovering the locations and the content assigned to them on a computer with online internet access using a web browser. The interactive list control not only helps you to select and define the order of the individual points of the walk, it is also possible to replay the corresponding information several times. Points can be selected by clicking their symbol on the map or the name in the list.

In the footsteps of the Paul Street boys

FerencvárosThe interactive audio guided tour entitled "In the footsteps of the Paul Street boys" was commissioned by the Municipalities of Ferencváros and Józsefváros. Ferenc Molnár's novel is one of the best-known Hungarian literary works. It has been published more than 80 times, and it has been translated into numerous languages. The story of Boka, Nemecsek and the other boys can be read in almost every larger country of Europe, Asia and America, from Albania through Mexico and Japan to Norway.

During this walk which is a joint project of the Institute for Computer Science and Control (SZTAKI) and the Ferencváros Local History Collection, you can acquaint yourself with the most important Ferencváros and Józsefváros venues of the novel. Upon the introduction of the sights, in addition to short architectural descriptions, you can hear selected passages from the novel, together with musical accompaniments evoking the atmosphere of the time. Archive photos compiled for each location and scenes from the 1969 feature film directed by Zoltán Fábri make the tour more colourful.
